OLIVIA HARPER

FINE ARTIST

"My practice is form driven by creating gestural paintings as a response to my emotions and feelings of everyday life. Each gesture created within my work is a response to what’s being felts at that time. This body of work is non-representational to the physical world we live in, but is a representation to personal feelings, meaning my work is bringing these into a physical state. The main formal elements my work focuses on is the gesture/marks made, colour and surface texture. I want all of these to be part of creating an emotive response from the audience. I want the audience to acknowledge that these paintings are a representation to emotional moments I have felt and from this - create their own response. Whether this is an emotional response to what the formal elements mean to them or simply responding to physical qualities of the painting. As I want my work to create a response, I have really focused on the formal elements of my work, creating an impasto surface and vibrant contrasting colours to almost overwhelm the audience. I want these paintings to be viewed as a body of work and an outcome of the same process, but seen individually by the audience."
